Mobile plan types and the terms to check
There is no single plan type that suits everyone. Use this guide to identify the structure that may fit your needs, then verify the full provider terms before choosing.
Rolling and short-commitment plans
These plans usually renew on a regular basis and may offer more flexibility than a long fixed term. They can be useful when your needs may change, but the headline monthly amount should not be the only comparison point.
Check before choosing
- Minimum term and cancellation notice.
- Whether the price is introductory and when it can change.
- Data allowance, speed restrictions and fair-use rules.
- Roaming, tethering and data rollover rules.
Fixed-term SIM-only plans
A fixed-term SIM plan may exchange flexibility for a defined commitment. Compare the total expected cost over the minimum term, not only the first monthly payment.
Check before choosing
- The minimum term and total contract cost.
- Any annual or in-contract price adjustment.
- Early-exit charges and cancellation procedure.
- Coverage where you live, work and travel regularly.
Handset and airtime plans
Plans that include a device may divide the cost into equipment and airtime elements. Read the agreement carefully so you understand what you are financing or purchasing.
Check before choosing
- Upfront payment and total device repayments.
- Whether the handset and airtime agreements are separate.
- Device ownership and upgrade conditions.
- Credit checks, missed-payment consequences and insurance exclusions.
Coverage and speed
Coverage can vary by postcode, building, device, congestion and time. Coverage maps are estimates rather than guarantees. Check your usual locations and consider testing service where a return or cooling-off option applies.
Allowances and “unlimited” wording
Read fair-use, speed management, tethering and roaming terms. A broad marketing label may still have usage conditions that affect how the service works in practice.
Comparing price fairly
| Factor | Why it matters | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly charge | May change during the term. | Starting price and adjustment method. |
| Upfront cost | Affects the real initial price. | Activation, delivery and device payment. |
| Minimum term | Controls commitment and exit cost. | Start date, end date and notice. |
| Allowances | Extra use may cost more or be restricted. | Data, calls, texts and fair-use rules. |
| Total expected cost | Supports like-for-like comparison. | All mandatory payments over the term. |
